PERMANENT / TEMPORARY

URBAN SCULPTURE

Short information about KUNST://ABSEITS VOM NETZ and the project in Sarajevo

Sarajevo / Bosnia-Herzegovina will be station no. 2 of underground line 3

(line 3 runs Graz – Odzak – Sarajevo – Graz)

An artistic intervention in connection with an architectural workshop to the topic „minimal housing“ in cooperation with the University of Technology Graz and the University in Sarajevo. The workshop with students from Graz and Sarajevo will take place alternating in Graz and in Sarajevo.

At a CCN (Cultural City Network) - conference in Graz in June 2000 KAVN presented its plan to set up a new underground-station in Sarajevo in the year 2003 to the delegation of Sarajevo/Bosnia-Herzegovina. The members of this delegation looked favorably upon this idea of KAVN and agreed to support such cooperation between Graz and Sarajevo.

The project will be realized in form of cooperation with the Sarajevo Center for Contemporary Arts (SCCA / so.ba) and with the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo.

The start up for this cooperative project between KAVN, University of Technology Graz, the SCCA and the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo was on 9th March 2002 at 01.00 pm at SCCA/so.ba.

A few notes to the concept:

Sarajevo will be the next station (of the line 3) in the virtual underground-network of KUNST://ABSEITS VOM NETZ (KAVN) – a network and a concept that connects different cities, places and institutions. Once started in Graz, the different lines of the underground are running today from Graz to St. Petersburg (Russia), to Aarhus (Denmark) and now also to Sarajevo (Bosnia/Herzegovina). This all happens within the scope of the “Permanent/Temporary Urban Sculpture” on which KAVN works in context of “Graz 2003 – Cultural Capital of Europe”.

On the particular stations KAVN initiates and realizes various projects – all with the intention to achieve real improvements for the people frequenting these places, always with reflection not to graft something upon individuals, but KAVN intents to develop adequate possibilities for realizations together with all persons involved.

In Sarajevo cooperation will take place between KAVN, the University of Technology Graz, the University/Academy in Sarajevo and SCCA. This project is subject to the concepts of “Minimal Housing”, a matter upon which Prof. Peter Schreibmayer from TU-Graz worked already a long time yet. During this cooperation students will have workshops in Sarajevo and in Graz, what should help to establish a (lasting) mutual transfer of knowledge and information, an exchange of culture and personalities. This project started on 9th March 2002, and the result of the common work will be presented in summer 2003 in Sarajevo.

Project sketch by Prof. Peter Schreibmayer (University of Technology Graz):

Minimal Housing

Title of project:

„Minimal Housing“ cooperation with Kunst://abseits vom Netz in scope of the „Permanent/Temporary Urban Sculpture Graz 2003“.

Partners of the project:

KAVN, SCCA, Academy of Fine Arts Sarajevo, possibly a constructor of prefabricated houses

Aims of the project:

This project is part of an artistic project, which has to be located in the sphere of social art.

In the field of architecture- resp. in the field of Universities of Technologies on the one hand the matter is a transfer of knowledge, of information, a cultural exchange in form of workshops, on the other hand it is a real, built object, which represents the results from the above mentioned activities, but which also can be able to communicate these results.

In terms of fact, it shall be developed and built a building-system, which enables with a minimum of elements a maximum of flexibility and variability.

The system has to be related to reality in its whole scale. Therefore the following aspects have to be considered:

Finally an object shall be planned, a certain structure of rooms by using this system and this shall be realized in Sarajevo on a prominent place. For a certain period this object will serve as a special form to impart knowledge because it presents itself and the system on which it is based, but also because it contains other information-media (plans, models, animations, internet, partners for discussions etc.)

The structure of rooms shall be realised in a way (concerning the number of elements and the design of elements) that it can be used in another context after its disassembly. (Apartments or at least a start-volume for an accommodation.)

KUNST://ABSEITS VOM NETZ was founded in 1997. The aims of the association are:

Since 1996 KAVN intervenes by means of long-term projects in order to favor the preservation and development of social surviving-zones within the urban structure of Graz. But KAVN also develops an international network of projects beyond the established systems of arts. The artistic interventions – developed together with the folks on the project-sites – aim always at a effective, lasting and positive change of living-spheres

PROFILE OF THE INITIATIVE

KUNST://ABSEITS VOM NETZ

In 1997, on initiative of Erwin Posarnig, KUNST://ABSEITS VOM NETZ was founded as an association dedicated to the realization of contemporary intervening projects in public places.

It is one of the basic intentions to achieve real changes for margined groups of the population – improvements of their living-conditions. This is done in collaboration with the persons concerned, with private persons, NGOs and the communal public authorities and administrative bodies. The intention of KUNST://ABSEITS VOM NETZ is not only to reflect and represent public and social circumstances within the self-referring artistic system of galleries and museums (what’s the traditional way of acting), but KAVN intents to obtain a real improvement and integration of ”fringe groups” into public life. KAVN works exclusively within the scope of long-term projects lasting several years, which are accompanied by scientific sociological studies.

Since 1996 KAVN succeeded to achieve persistent changes, which are assumed and carried on by partner-organizations - especially with projects in the field of marginalized groups, such as e.g. homeless people.

KUNST://ABSEITS VOM NETZ understands its artistic work as an act of appreciation of the individuals involved in the projects and their specific personal requirements are considered at all times. The particular projects or interventions are not grafted upon the individuals, but KAVN intents to develop a possibility for realization in consent with all persons involved.

The aim of the projects realized by KAVN is to increase the visibleness and appearance of living-conditions, and most of all to change such social and political grievances, which characterize an increasingly aggressive capitalistic oriented, globalised economic world.

In the year 2003 Graz will be Cultural Capital of Europe. One of the projects of KAVN is the installation of an international subway-system with stations on various surviving-zones in Europe. During this year Graz will present itself with a great number of very different projects to the European public. On opinion of KAVN however, Graz will only be able to acquire a strong image as social capital, which has to become emancipated of the architectonic and urban surface cosmetics and aesthetics, taking place at the moment. That’s the only way that Graz can settle as a new and authentic city of pluralism and persistence in the European consciousness.
